SER Youth Services is dedicated to developing Detroit's youth for success in life by creating and preparing them for opportunities for
long-term employment, life skills management, educational advancement, and personal growth and development.
SER Youth Services are coordinated at the Samaritan Center , a One Stop Service Center that integrates a seamless service delivery
system that focus on the community as a whole. Here young people are guided to the path of long-term self-sustainability through
supportive and comprehensive guidance and counseling. At the Samaritan Center youth have access to an array of services including:
GED preparation and tutoring, alternative education training, job readiness training and placement, occupational skills training, job corp
services, medical and mental health services, spiritual ministries, youth recreational opportunities, housing development, and business
and entrepreneurship development. SER Youth Services embraces a holistic strategy to help make a real difference in the lives of all
youth in the communities we serve.
SER GED Program
The SER GED Preparation program offers a curriculum that allows students to work on their specific areas of academic weakness.
Instead of using a traditional classroom, where students sit at desks and learn the same things at the same time, we are able to assess
areas of weakness for individual students and assign specific remedies for improvement. Each GED student works only on those areas
where he or she needs improvement, allowing for a shorter time spent in the preparation process, less boredom in the classroom, and a
much higher percentage of actual GED testing success.
In addition, in order to ensure that all potential GED testers have attained the education levels required, many new students are first
placed in remediation before they begin the actual GED preparation classes. These students work on many of the same exercises as the
GED students, but at a level and pace more suitable to their existing skills. When attendance and assessments show the necessary
improvement, these students are moved into the GED Preparation program.
Another strong feature of the program is our GED faculty and staff, who are committed to seeing our students succeed and spend time
with each student as needed. A combination of computer-based learning, appropriate handouts, and ongoing assessments allow the
customer to focus more completely on achieving necessary levels to be sent for GED testing.
The GED Preparation program is operated from two SER Detroit locations: the Samaritan Center at 5555 Conner (Eastside) and 9301
Michigan Avenue (Southwest). The program is available Monday thru Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at each center. In order to
participate in the G ED Program you must be between the ages of 18-21 and reside in the City of Detroit . Participants will also be asked to
take a test to determine entry level math and reading scores.
SER Metro-Detroit is excited to offer this program to the community and build success upon success. If you are interested in enrolling,
please contact Maizie Perez at 313-846-2240, Ext.300 or email at mperez@sermetro.org. We look forward to helping you attain your
GED!
