Dear Friend,

Welcome to SER Metro-Detroit’s website and thank you for visiting.

SER Metro-Detroit began in 1971 as a small community based organization and has since evolved into a vital Detroit resource, enhancing the lives of thousands across the city each year. Through a series of education, job training, and job placement programs, along with youth development and education initiatives, SER provides Detroit residents with the skills, resources and opportunities they need to achieve self-sufficiency.

There is no question that a growing number of families across southeastern Michigan; indeed, across the nation, are struggling and that even a job is not enough to move people out of poverty.  Recognizing this challenge, we have joined with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and United Way for Southeastern Michigan (UWCS) to operate the Center for Working Families.  The program provides the on-site employment services and economic supports that participants need to move up the economic ladder and achieve long term economic stability.  There have been additional exciting new initiatives that we now offer that enhance the employment competitiveness of people who walk through SER’s doors every day.  Among them; the SER Learning Academy, an alternative high school that provides academic instruction for half a day and vocational training in demand industries for the remainder of the school day.  Beginning in a few months, SER will begin to operate that Detroit Workforce Development Department-sponsored Youth of Promise Leadership Program.  We have also established an Adult Education Center that be used by SER participants in their efforts to attain the absolutely necessary education credential for the workplace as well as post-secondary education and training.  The Samaritan Center One Stop Resources Center continues to be an all-important resource for Detroit’s eastside residents and families.  The campus currently houses 106 partner agencies that combine synergistically to meet common goals.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I would like to thank the Amigos de SER — our family of corporate partners founded by Ford Motor Company more than 25 years ago and chaired by Mr. Frank D. Stella. Especially during this challenging economic times, SER would not be the organization it is today without the financial and in-kind support of Amigos corporations.

Again, I thank you for taking time to learn more about our organization and hope you will take advantage of the many resources that SER Metro Detroit has to offer.

Sincerely,
