On May 28 2008, Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (District 13) held a Press Conference at SER Metro-Detroit to
introduce the Detainee Basic Medical Act of 2008 (H.R.5950).  The Bill would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to
establish procedures for the timely and effective delivery of medical and mental health care for detained immigrants.  This is a
critical bill in light of the recent detainee deaths owing to lack of medical treatment.  Following the Press Conference,
Congresswoman Kilpatrick held a roundtable discussion on immigration and immigration policy.

The Press Conference was attended by organizations representing the large immigrant and refugee communities in
metropolitan Detroit; communities that enrich our diverse city and region.  Among those attending the Press Conference and
participating in the roundtable discussion, were: ACCESS, Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, CHASS, the Consul de Mexico,
City of Detroit, the Council on American Islamic Relations, Freedom House, Hispanic Business Association, LA SED, SER Metro-
Detroit, Southwest Detroit Business Association and MOSES, a coalition of 65 member organizations working to advance the
rights and opportunities of the average citizen in Metropolitan Detroit.

Congresswoman Kilpatrick is returning to Detroit with her colleagues in Congress for continued dialogue with community
leaders and federal and local law enforcement on important immigration issues and policy, and the impact on families,
neighborhoods, and businesses.
