The Youth of Promise Leadership Program holds “Power Series” panel discussions on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. A recent discussion, entitled ‘Green and Clean, focused on environmental issues. To gain a better insight on these issues, four panelists were brought in to speak to youth: Lila Cabil (The Peoples Water Board) spoke about water rights; Melanie Steele (Walker Miller Energy) spoke about energy conservation and what her company is doing to help; Michelle Martinez (Sierra Club) spoke about clean energy solutions; Lionel Bradford (Greening of Detroit) talked about tree planting in Detroit and urban farming.
Another recent “Power Series” event was titled ‘Sharing Knowledge’. The focus of this panel discussion was to bring a group of professionals together, who are native Detroiters, to discuss how they are using education to uplift themselves and the community. There was a diverse panel of 6 people: Christopher Covington (Student Center Program Coordinator, Wayne State), Christianne Sims (Chief Engagement Officer, Urbanize (D)), Anthony Cuffie (Author, Producer, Screenwriter, Director and Songwriter), Adriana Alvarez (Community Organizer, Congress of Communities), Baraka Johnson (Project Fundraiser and Community Organizer), and Lilian Roa (Juvenile Justice Specialist, SWCS).
